James practices labour, employment, and human rights law. He has appeared before all levels of court in Alberta, as well as the Alberta Labour Relations Board, the Alberta Human Rights Commission, numerous labour arbitration boards, and other administrative decision-makers. In addition to his busy labour law practice on behalf of unions, James has extensive experience advising and representing non-unionized employees in employment matters, including negotiating and litigating wrongful dismissal claims and other workplace disputes.

James joined Chivers Carpenter as an associate in 2022. Before joining the firm, James articled and practiced with a boutique litigation firm, where he gained experience litigating large, complex commercial disputes.

James received both his Juris Doctor and his Bachelor of Arts (with a double major in English and Political Science) from the University of Alberta. During law school, James volunteered extensively with organizations such as Student Legal Services, Civil Claims Duty Counsel, the Edmonton Community Legal Centre, and more. In James’ final year of law school, he was hired as a Dayleader/Volunteer Supervisor by Student Legal Services’ Civil and Family Law Project, where he assisted low-income members of the Edmonton community with small claims disputes and various other legal issues.
