Madam Justice Ritu Khullar is a former Managing Partner at Chivers Carpenter. She primarily practiced litigation in the public law sector, involving labour and employment, privacy, human rights, administrative, and constitutional matters. She acted for the Canadian Human Rights Commission and the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner. Ritu also appeared before various boards and tribunals, all levels of court in Alberta, and the Supreme Court of Canada.
In addition to teaching at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law, Ritu has presented at various conferences, both academic and professional.
In 2017, Ritu was appointed to the Court of King’s Bench in Alberta before being appointed to the Court of Appeal of Alberta, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut in 2018. Notably, Ritu was the first South Asian judge in Alberta and the first South Asian woman appointed to a Canadian appellate court.
Ritu was appointed as the Chief Justice of Alberta on November 28, 2022.
